Name That Religion: Nuwaubianism

namethatreligion-nuwaubianism

One of the four “core” topics of this blog is religion, so I thought I would try out a new feature today.  It’s “Name That Religion” — in which I learn a little and then teach you a little bit about a religion/following/cult/organized group with interesting beliefs.

If you find this fun/worth repeating, please share/like/comment or in some other way let me know so I know.  If I write more I will add a dedicated page where you can find all of them.

Our first featured religion: Nuwaubianism!

Addendum: I’ve started adding to the list of religions.  Find more here.

I've opened up an Amazon Storefront -- see a litle of what the Rogue Boys buy and a few of my curated recommendations.

Origin

  • Founded in the 1960’s by Dwight York — a musician living in New York.
  • He has had several aliases and changed his name several times
  • York served time in prison for rape, assault, and robbery before founding the religion
  • Often termed a “cult,” it mostly centered around York and its followers viewing him as a God

Beliefs

  • Initially combined Muslim beliefs along with other religious belief system, but it was all just a made up mish-mash
  • He ultimately settled on a mix of black supremacist ideas with worship of the Egyptians and their pyramids
  • Also endorsed a belief in UFOs and various conspiracies related to the Illuminati and the Bilderbergers
  • His group ran bookstores, gift shops, and other stores around Brooklyn to raise money
  • Adherents surrendered possessions, worked for free, and were given small stipends to live on ($25/day)
  • All women in the cult were part of York’s harem, allowing him to have sex with anyone in the group he wanted
  • At its peak had up to 500 adherents living in apartment complexes in Brooklyn

  • Dwight York is in jail
  • He abused hundreds of children (perhaps more) through the cult
  • In addition he also violated multiple federal laws related to RICO charges
  • He could potentially be released in the year 2122
